BANG! BANG! BANG! That was me at about 7:00 AM this morning. And that was Mark’s rude awakening to the day. I was pounding on the sliding glass door that goes into our bedroom. Mark rolls over, startled. “Your sows are loose!” I yell through the door.
I had gone out to do my chores and was halfway there when I saw two large hulking forms that should not have been where they were! Mark got out there quickly and the slow motion chase began.
O.K. these pigs are friendly, but they don’t really come when they are called or follow a feed bucket for long. Mark came out and they amble up to him making their “I’m happy to see you sounds” and then amble off again. We both got feed and buckets which the sows were only mildly interested in.
And then to my horror they started up the drive and into my newly tended Japanese garden! THAT CANNOT HAPPEN! A 1,000 pounds of hog can do a lot of damage in just a few minutes.
With Mark ahead of them as the leader and me behind them slapping their rumps we got them quickly down the drive and closer to their pen. We really did make short work of getting them back in.
There is something to be said for a 500 pound sow… they are not much for sprinting and I can keep up with them. Farmers 1, Sows 0
That is so funny, two of my young hereford pigs got out the other day and i was behind her with a stick prodding her firmly from either side to get her to go back into her own field. She was arguing with me loudly the whole way and behind me was the other one, she just follows along like a lamb that one.. though they are not nearly as big as yours.. It is fun having a little farm with a bit of everything isn’t it! c
Our sows are full grown Berkshire and the othee is a DurocxBerkshire. I don’t know much about Hereford pigs. I’ll have to read up on them!
the Sows want a re-match !
